I have been using CLIPS, an expert system shell developed by NASA -- Having been impressed by the speed and power of it on my 386 box, I have decided to shell out the $350 for the source -- approx. 25,000 lines of (allegedly) very portable C. CLIPS has many nice features, including its use of the Rete Pattern Matching Algorithm. It appears to have inherited much from OPS5 -- it does not directly implement backward chaining in the inference engine, but it took me but two days to implement backward chaining in a limited way -- starting with assertion of a single goal attribute, without representing certainty factors, single-valued attributes, etc. This was an exercise mostly for my edification, since I intend to build only forward-chaining systems. My intention is to make extensions, such as a portable foreign-function interface, as well as X Windows support. It is my intention to developsubscription mailing list of CLIPS users, afficionados, or otherwise interested persons. If you use or are interested in CLIPS, please e-mail me. This is not a formal announcement, just a query to test level of interest. Ciao. -- {apple, pacbell, hplabs, ucbvax}!well!gors gors@well.sf.ca.us (Doolan) | (Meyer) | (Sierchio) | (Stewart)

Could someone provide me with information on how to contact NASA's technology distribution organization, the Computer Software Management and Information Center. On obtaining CLIPS (C Language Integrated Production System). An e-mail address would fit the bill nicely. At our research lab we have a problem... For one of our projects we want to
use the CLIPS shell (why? because it's forward-chaining, cheap, written in C,
and you get to have the source so we can even try to connect it to other
programs).
We ordered the package like 2 months ago through some Dutch software firm
(why a Dutch firm? why not straight from a firm in the U.S.? There are reasons
for that too...(long)). However, due to some ``logistical problems" within our
own company (order form lost, etc.) the shell still has not arrived.
But it's about time we started implementing something, so here is our request:
Does anyone have a CLIPS shell (C sources, or at least executable for
PC/AT) we can use until our order arrives?
Before anyone accuses me of illegal actions ... from earlier postings I am
under the impression that CLIPS is not a copyrighted product. I am not some
legal expert, so I only assume that not being under copyright means I can
get a copy without any problems. If however that is not true, then please
disregard this request.

Does anybody know of an InterNet BBoard, Newsgroup, or other electronic gathering of souls for CLIPS, the C-based expert system shell distributed by NASA? Thanks for any info, Michael Kahn (kahn@informatics.WUSTL.EDU) or post to the net...

I'm interested too ...

With respect to Michael Kahn's request for help with CLIPS, I suggest you call the CSC Software Technology Branch Help Desk at (713) 280-2233 to receive information on CLIPS and their other products (available through COSMIC). There is a software support bulletin board accessible through modem which supports CLIPS and other products. Regards, Carolyn Banda
