I would be interested in recommendations for a shell that can generate a complete subsystem for use within a larger program. The code so generated would preferably be in an object-oriented language, but C would be alright as well. It should be an efficient system capabable of handling at least 100's of rules comfortably. It will have to work with large bodies of textual information, most commonly large indexes of information from external data stores, so communication capability such as IP-based network protocol interconnection may also be a factor. Both non-commercial and commercial systems are of interest, though a commercial system cannot have run-time royalties associated with it or it would not be usable.
