I have seen two cars with gas smell problems. Both were the same cause. The gas filler neck on both cars travel through the trunk compartment to to the tank. The un-leaded nozzle restrictor had been removed to allow the larger leaded gas nozzle to fit. Removing the restrictor, was accomplished by breaking the spot welds and tearing the restrictor from the neck. This caused a very small tear in the through the filler neck. When the car was driven, tank presure would blow fumes into the trunk. Air flow though the back seat to the drivers would bring strong gas fumes. Hang a drop light near the gas filler neck in the trunk and look in the filler neck for light. If you see light, you have a hole. To fix, remove the neck ( if it detaches from tank ), wash it out with water, and solder shut. Dave Miller
