What are the lightest laptops on the market? I've seen the Tandy 1000FD (the one with DOS and DeskMate in ROM, 640K, and one floppy) at 6 pounds; I understand the NEC UltraLite is about 5 pounds. Are these the winners? Great speed and a backlit display are not important to me. I want something for taking notes that I can tote with ease. My current NEC PC-8500, at 9 pounds, seemed light enough when I got it, but once I hefted the Tandy the PC-8500 started to seem kind of herky. What ARE important to me are a tiltable 80 x 25 character screen that's readable in ordinary room light and a full-travel keyboard. (The Compaq LTE's flattish keyboard just doesn't work for me, although the Tandy's similar design was acceptable.) Also, since a hard disk is not compatible with the goal of light weight, ingenious solutions to the problem of mass storage (RAM cards, software in ROM, etc.) are also important. What are the best solutions you've seen? Please reply via mail. I will summarize if there is sufficient response. - David D.
