[net.auto] Starters & Flywheels

taylor@wivax.UUCP (08/24/83)

My car refused to start, apparently due to starter problems. I removed the
starter and realized that a 3 inch section of the flywheel was 80/90% worn.
The gears on the starter were also worn but not that bad.

In your opinion do I have to replace the flywheel or can I cheat somehow?

How hard is it change an 73 AMC Hornet 232 (6)? Do you have the instructions,
or know where a good step-by-step instruction sheet/book is?

Thanks in advance,

With the flywheel worn that badly I would replace it. The
easiest way would probably be to remove the transmission
and attack the problem from that direction since there
are fewer things to disconnect than by removing the
engine. To do it properly you will need a transmission
jack which may be rented. I usually make do with a regular
haul out the engine then you will need an engine hoist
which is also a rentable item.

If you would like more detail let me know and I'll post
to you directly. One more item......make sure you have
a torque wrench to properly install the new flywheel. If
you want to go a step further you might replace the shaft
seals on the transmission while it is out. These are cheap
items to replace but difficult to get to when you need to
so do it while you can!!

I find it hard to imagine that you could save money on a job like that
by trying to have the flywheel fixed. Replace it. I've never worked
on an AMC so I can't tell you what to look for; but I can recommend a
good instruction manual -- the factory shop manual. My experience with
these has always been that they are more complete and clearer than
Chilton, Peterson, or any of the others.
