It is a retrofit- they scrape off the reflective coating and add their backlit panel. It does consume some of the power, but they also have a battery upgrade that gives roughly the same battery life. I like it. I had a problem with glare before & this fixes that. The screen is no more or less ledgable given the right light, but the backlit screen is now usable in a wider variety of light conditions. It 'whines' a little, but that is my only nit with it.
