I noticed the same annoying whine when I looked at a T1200HB in a store
a while ago, and later asked about the whine when I talked to a
Toshiba customer service person. He said that if a display whines, it is
defective; the display should be silent. I have since seen T1200HB's that
are indeed silent. Since you _recently_ purchased yours, call Toshiba and
see if you get the same answer I got, and if so, you might want to have
them fix it.

My T1000SE has the faintest of whines...if the room is very quiet. Normal
Background noise washes it out easily.

The screen whine may be a defect, but it's a common defect. The first
1200HB I bought (from a mail-order house) whined and I sent it back;
the second one whined and I sent it back (along with an irate letter);
the third one is *almost* totally quiet, and I'm satisfied with it.
I know one other person who got a whiner, but he kept it.
