[comp.sys.laptops] Info wanted on T1000SE

abaumhau@udecc.engr.udayton.edu (Andy Baumhauer) (04/10/90)

I am currently considering purchasing my first laptop and have a few questions
about the Toshiba T1000SE.

a) Can the extra memory be used as a ram disk?
b) Is the expansion memory board an ordinary SIMM module?
c) How long does the battery last during average use?
d) Would you recommend this machine?

Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

> a) Can the extra memory be used as a ram disk?

yes - and it's battery backed-up too. Or you can opt to turn it into
a heap that is shared by a disk cache/ram drive/printer spooler/display
memory. Or you can split the spare memory between the "HARDram" and the
heap. The heap-based ram disk is not battery backed-up. Supposedly the
heap-based ram drive grows as you put files on it.

> b) Is the expansion memory board an ordinary SIMM module?

no.

> c) How long does the battery last during average use?

2 - 4 hours is what I have been seeing.

> d) Would you recommend this machine?

YES. The display and keyboard are outstanding. The "ctrl" key
is even in the right place. 1.44 Mb floppies are terriffic.
I rarely miss my hard disk. I like using a machine without a fan
(very quiet).

Get a spare battery (~60), and a 2 MB memory card (~$700), if
you can afford it.

If the street price of the T1000SE is about $1200 and the extra
memory is $700, it would seem that the tradeoff would be the T1000SE's
lower weight versus the hard disk of the T1200HB (street price's
advertise about $1850). That is, the price of the T1000SE with extra
memory puts it almost into the price range of the last generation of
HD laptops such as the T1200HB. What are your comments about this
comparison?
