[comp.sys.laptops] Do-it-yourself upgrade for the hard-drive in the Toshiba 1600

di@hstbme.mit.edu (David Israel) (06/05/90)

This is posted for a friend without net access. He has a Toshiba 1600
with a 20M hard disk that he would like to upgrade to 40 or even 80 Mb.
He says that Toshiba sells a 40 Mb drive for 2-3 times the going market
price, and would like to install a Conner 3.5" IDE drive himself. However,
he has no info on the BIOS drive table in this machine; the 20M drive
is a "Type 12", but he doesn't know what the other defined types are, and
so doesn't know what kind of readily available drive he could buy and
install with the confidence that it will work.

Has anybody done this before, or does anyone have the necessary info?
What drive should he buy, what table entry does it use, how can he do
a low-level format, what are the potential pitfalls?

Please reply by E-mail to me; I will summarize if interest warrants.
Thanks in advance.
