I opened up my Cambridge Z88 and looked inside this morning. You can open it without damaging the computer. You will tear the serial-number label. Do this at your own risk, and don't blame me if you break the computer. Using a wrist-strap while you handle the opened machine is advisable. To open it, you need to take out all of the screws in the back. There are screws under the two rubber feet in the front. There is a screw under the serial-number label. My unit does not have a door for the expansion connector, but the connector is still there inside the unit. A chip that I guess is the internal RAM bears the nubmer D42832, which I would imagine means it is a 32k x 8 RAM. The PC is etched for a device with 4 more pins. I didn't check, but I assume some of these are address lines. It might thus be possible to install more _internal_ memory in this beast by swapping that chip, perhaps for less than the cost of an equivalent cartrige. Am I correct in guessing that the Z88 uses _static_ RAM? Does anyone have more details of the hardware internals? Bruce Perens
