I've been processing information on laptops for a while now, and have been in the midst of deciding whether to go 286 or 386, as well as other attributes I would like to see. Recently, i've seen a few ads for the Dell 316LT 80386 laptop, with VGA plasma display, and batteries, and it looks pretty closely similar to one of the machines I had targeted, the Toshiba 3100SX. To add to the confusion, I just saw an ad for the ZEOS 386SX laptop, which is about $1000 cheaper than the other two, although its not battery powered. Now for the questions... 1. What are peoples opinions on the use of batteries in the laptops? Is this just a waste of money? Do you really use them? 2. Any general opinions on Dell, Zeos, Toshiba as companies? Am I going to buy something that will be unsupported and problem prone? Obviously, Toshiba has certain advantages, due to their size, but that can be a hinderance also. 3. Is anyone annoyed at Dell's latest laptop ad, where they compare their 386sx laptop selling price against other companies' suggested retail price? For example: The Dell 316LT for under $3500 for a 20 MB system vs the Toshiba 3100SX 40 MB system for $5999. I know that I can get the Toshiba 3100SX for a heck of a lot cheaper than that! ($3500-$4000). Just who are they trying to kid?!? 4. Any other recommendations for a 386SX laptop with VGA monitor (yes, a good one, not one of those that you have to be looking at exactly the right angle to see...)? 5. One last question. With the laptops doing VGA monitors, do they do the MCGA 320x200 256 color mode? I realize that most of them only do 16 levels of gray, so they can't emulate all the colors, but do they choke on this stuff? The reason I question this, is because I have some animation software, that I'd like to run on the laptop, but it only runs in the above mode. As always, Thanks, so very much, in advance! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | Brad Skrbec | "For it is the doom of men that they forget." | | Motorola Cellular | -- Merlin | | Arlington Heights, IL | UUCP: uunet!motcid!skrbec | | | Internet: motcid!skrbec@uunet.uu.net | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
