I've had good luck using a teflon-based additive in my cars; it has been marketed under a variety of labels, most recently (perhaps now exclusively) as SLICK 50. It goes in after an engine has been properly broken in (after say 10,000 miles to be safe) with a regular oil change in place of a quart of oil; it is compatible with all petroleum-based oils. One treatment (one quart) lasts a good 50,000 miles and supposedly makes the moving parts slip easier; my experience has been that it increased the perceived horsepower (the engine got beefier almost immediately after the treatment) and with 100,000 miles on the one treatment the engine still runs well - no internal problems with the engine (knock on wood)!
