I will be buying a laptop soon (maybe the Bondwell 310, if DAK ever gets it out the door -- I've had it on order for 3 weeks and counting), and instead of getting a dedicated internal modem, I was thinking about getting a "pocket modem". Seems to me that a pocket modem would add flexibility -- it could be used with other machines in a pinch -- and they don't seem to be that much more expensive. The only downside is losing the sole serial port, but I can't think of a scenario where I'd need a free serial port when using the modem anyway. 2400 baud or higher and full Hayes compatibilty are musts, MNP5 a plus. Line-powered, or small-battery-powered are also pluses. Any recommendations appreciated. Also, speaking of Bondwell, does anybody know of a way to get the B310 Plus (backlit) screen for a 310? I called Bondwell, and the person I got on the phone (well-informed but not technical) insisted that 1) there were no other changes besides the screen between the 310 and the 310 Plus, and 2) there is no upgrade path between the two. It seems to me that if there are no supporting hardware changes for the new screen, I could just buy a Plus screen and replace the screen outright (for example, buying just the part from a Bondwell repair facility). If not that, the next best thing would be that there's only a different connector or something that could be manufactured. Worst case would be that there's some board-level changes needed to support the Plus screen. Anybody got the answers? I like the other features of the 310, and it's half the price of the T1200XE... -- Alan Denney # Informix # aland@informix.com # {pyramid|uunet}!infmx!aland "She makes champagne out of 7-Up and cheap wine -- a Chemist."
