[comp.sys.laptops] Info Wanted

I'm thinking of buying a laptop for home use. I need it to run DOS and
would like it to run Pick (yes Pick). I can get the 20MB Mitsuba 286
20 MHz machine for $2150 but I don't really want to spend that much. I
know that the new VGA 40 MB Mitsuba is coming very soon so prices may
drop on the older model.

I would buy a second hand machine. It dosen't need to be the lightest
or the fastest on the market.

Any ideas?

The Price Club in San Diego is selling a Packard Bell PB286LP for
$1899.00 (at least, they were two weeks ago when I was there).
It has a 20MB hard disk, operates at 12MHz and has a 1.4M floppy
drive. Price Club was also selling a Sharp with two floppy drives
whose specs I can't recall. It was around $900.00.

The Packard Bell weighs about 17 pounds.

 Greetings,
I am shopping around for a laptop to use rather intensively
during upcoming study for a masters degree, and would much
appreciate any feedback people have concerning machines,
configurations, utilities, etceteras (add your own idea here).

Currently i am most interested in Toshiba's t1000se/xe.
Because they are lighter than most, have 1mb ram with
the possibility of adding more with 3rd party cards, and
from what little i've seen have readable backlit screens,
along with a hard disk for the -xe. For the -se i would
consider buying the apricorn 2mb card and using the floppies
to backup my work at the end of the day. The -xe with its
hard disk would be nice but may end up costing too much.
The following points are the important ones i am considering.

. Fast - either a hard disk or enough ram for a ramdisk.
I am tired of waiting on floppies.
. Cost less than $2000, hopefully much less.
     . Backlit 25x80 screen.
. Terminal emulation (vt100) (currently i am using Kermit).
. Weight less than 7 lbs. The lighter the better as
i plan to carry it around in a shoulder bag or backpack.
. Near fullsize keyboard to support 10 finger typing.
. Word processing (currently i am using WordPerfect)
          - to take notes, write papers, and correspondence.
. Ability to create C or Scheme programs would be nice
and so IBM type machines have an edge here.

Are any of the following at hand or worth waitng for? -
     . Credit card 1mb non-volatile ram
. Batteries with considerable lifespans (>20 hours)
. Very light weight, under 3 lbs.

Any ideas, past experiences (good or bad), or words of
wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
David Oury
