[comp.sys.laptops] Sparc portable/laptop

mist@amc-gw.amc.com (Michael Steltman) (08/31/90)

There has been a lot of fuzz lately about a soon-to-be-released Sparc
laptop, manufactured by some Japanese company (was it Matshusita?)

Anybody heard of it? Size? Diskspace / memorysize ? Screen resolution?
Price? Availability?

I just have on my desk an ad from TOSHIBA (ok, Matsushita) - in Japanese
of course (see my signature and you'll know why :-) about their new laptop
SPARC LT (AS1000).

They say its architecture is similar to SUN RISC workstations (and I
have heard one can't tell the difference - from the user point of view),
running last version of SUN OS. For those who are interested in such
figures, they claim to reach 13.2 MIPS or 1.5MFLOPS... Dimensions are
W340 x D375 x H99 (mm), weight is 7.8kg. It comes with a 1152x900 dots
active matrix (TFD) display - no color yet (with optional CRT). There is
a 180MB 3.5inches internal Hard Drive (and they say something about 1.5GB
expansion...), a 3.5inches FDD floppy disk drive (reading MS-DOS format
too); and memory is 8MB, expandable to 40MB max. It comes also with one
Ethernet port, two RS232C ports, one SCSI port and one audio port, one
SBus slot and one modem slot. I guess it should be available in Japan now
- and I certainly don't know where else. Finally, price is advertised as
1,980,000 yen - which makes about 13200 US dollars, I believe.

They suggest to phone to 03-372-0141 (in Tokyo) for further information.
If you're lucky, they might even speak english... Otherwise, given address
is: Tokyo Denki Matsushita Kaisha. Honda 1-31-3, Nakano, Tokyo 164. Japan.

 Hope this helps,

 -Michel.

What sort of modem slot - do you mean it has a little PC bus inside,
or does it support some sort of Toshiba-custom modems? If it has a
little PC bus, is it a full- or a half-slot?

I'd like to set it up with a Telebit Trailblazer, talking PPP to the
nearest Internet tributary. If the modem can be a (full-slot
internal) Trailblazer PC, or perhaps even a Cellblazer...
