[comp.sys.laptops] T1000SE memory questions

afinlayson@kean.ucs.mun.ca (10/27/90)

Two questions about my T1000 SE:

1.) Although the little dear is billed as having 1 meg of RAM, in fact
640K is ROM occupied by DOS 3.3. Because I use my laptop just as a
notebook when away from my big box, I could do without a lot of the
DOS files like CHKDISC and DISCOPY etc. Is there anyway around the
defences on these files and a way to convert the saved space into true
RAM?

2.) Twice when saving large files (50 K or so working in WP 4.2) I have gotten
the message that the file was too big to save in hard RAM. No
problem, save to disc. But curiously, the readout at the top of the
WP directory menu says that there's 80 or 90 K available, plenty of
room it would seem. Why won't it fit?

Thanks,

It actually *does* have 1 meg of RAM.

There is 1 MB of RAM complete separate from the DOS 3.3 ROM. However,
because MS-DOS is brain dead, you can only access 640K of it directly.
The other 384K of memory can be configured as a "HardRAM" disk, or it
can be used as EMS memory for programs that can use it. But either
way, you don't get access to that 384K straight out of the box; you
have to do something to get to it.

I believe that SETUP10 enables the extra 384K as a HardRAM drive, but
I've never tried. You can also set up EMS memory. To do this, put
the following into the machine's CONFIG.SYS file:

device=emm.sys

Because the CONFIG.SYS file lives in non-volatile memory, you will
need to copy CONFIG.SYS to floppy, edit the copy, then store it back
into non-volatile memory using the SETUP10 program.

Perhaps WP files take up a lot more space on disk than they do in
memory.
