[comp.sys.laptops] Airplanes and Laptops: Are they Compatable

kopp@unix.cis.pitt.edu (Michael J Kopp) (12/16/90)

Folks:

This is the story I've been told about the compatablity of airplanes
and laptop computers:

1 - Providing that your laptop is properly RF Shielded you will
not be in violation of the federal law concerning RF Emmitions
	    within an aircraft.

	2 - Unless you're a tele-genius you probably will not be able to x-mit
air to ground without a radio-telephone to modem interface jack
such as the ones used to connect cellular car phones to computer
	    modems

3 - A friend of mine once related that his internal Hard Disk on his
Macintosh Laptop was damaged by the Electro-Magnetic Field
generated by the X-Ray Machine that they use at the airport
	    security checkpoints

4 - My friend also told me that a US-Air Stewardess said that the best
policy was to check with your airline before using the laptop
on board the aircraft for each airlines internal policy on
	    computer use inside their aircraft.

These are the facts as they were presented to me and I present them
to you as food for thought on this point of wether or not aircraft are
compatable with your laptops.
