[comp.sys.laptops] Toshiba 1000 LE first report

kiravuo@hila.hut.fi (Timo Kiravuo) (12/22/90)

I have now had a Toshiba 1000 LE for a week and a half now.

The machine has a 9 MHz 8086 processor, 1 MB of memory
upgradeable to 9 MB, a 20 MB hard disk and a 1,44 MB 3,5"
diskette drive. Display is backlighted blue LCD and the machine
weighs about 3 kg.

The setup I have includes an external battery charger and two
extra batteris. One battery gives roughly about two hours of use,
so with three batteries I have about a work day's worth of juice,
since I don't use the machine all day.

Loading one battery takes about 8 hours if the machine is on, 4
hours if the machine is off and only two hours with the loader.
The battery loader takes three batteries, but loads only one at
time, switching automatically to next one when one is loaded.

I also have a carrying case for the machine, but I do not use it
very much. Expect once for carrying some whiskey bottles, but
that's another story... I usually carry the thing in my backpack.

When I received the machine there were some problems. One cable
was missing, the setup program on the diskette did not work and
one of the key caps is wrong kind. This far I have not yet had
time to contact the importer here, so I don't know what they'll
do. I also have small difficulties in adjusting the display
contrast, it seems to be slightly uneven, especially at the left
upper corner.

This far I have been very happy with the machine. The weight is
not too much, it is not fast, but fast enough and it has both the
hard disk and diskette drive. I also like the keyboard for touch
typing.

If you are looking for a small machine for serious typing, but
not for heavy computing, this might be the right one for you.

Oh, yes. Turning power off puts the machine to sleep state
instead of shutting it off, and you can change batteries in this
state too.
