[comp.sys.laptops] Integrated Software

lsh@polari.UUCP (Lee Hauser) (01/01/91)

As my laptop is a Tandy 1100FD with only a single floppy drive, I've been on thesearch for decent integrated software. I tried (and liked) Microsoft
Works for awhile, but then someone lent me their copy of LotusWorks
(formerly Alphaworks) and I must admit I fell in love. Not only is it
more flexible, but it is actually easier to use on a single 720k drive
system than MSWorks. Once you are in an application, fewer disk
accesses seem to be needed. The word processing service is built into
the main exe file and so is instantly available; the comm application
is only 40k; spreadsheet and database I keep on a second diskette
along with a copy of the 59k overlay, and the config program,
spellchecker, etc sit on a third diskette. With MSWorks, even though
the whole program sat on one diskette, I was continuously flipping
disks in and out between the program disk and the data disk. I use it
mostly for wp and telecom, so most of what I need most of the time
sits on one diskette. Any other LotusWorks users out there?

If I pay for access, I don't have to disclaim ANYTHING!

So long as we're looking for LotusWorks' users...
any Framework user's out there? Framework
works very well on laptops, I hear of many people who use
it as their on-the-road software.

I've used Framework since its first incarnation and I have to report that
I'm a VERY SATISFIED user. I've got FW3 running on a two floppy NEC by
taking a subset of files from an installed copy. (ie. I left out the
dictionary files, examples, etc.). I like the database, spreadsheet and
wordprocessor but would like more in the way of graphics. The charting is
super (pie charts, bar charts, line charts, etc.). But I would like to have
the ability to draw a picture too. How about it A.T.

notebook computers. I have it on my current notebook, the CompuAdd
Companion. It is an excellent single program to carry on the machine.
The only part of the program that I have had any problems with is the
communications module -- the weak link in an otherwise excellent tool.

It just refuses to work on the CompuAdd, so I use YAM.

My next project may be to try to implement it on a Poquet as soon as
they come out with 2 meg cards for storaged.
