[comp.sys.laptops] Electronic equipment on international flights?

obrien@venus.ycc.yale.edu (01/10/91)

I followed some weeks back the discussion about carrying laptops onto aircraft.
However, I've just run into a situation that I don't recall being discussed.
I'm going to the UK in the next couple of weeks via Air India from the US, and
they've told me that they allow NO electronic equipment of any kind in the
cabin, whether in use or not. I'm assuming that this is a security thing (they
didn't say). They insist that I'll have to put my laptop in
my checked baggage. Naturally, I'm nervous, since a) I've seen
loading/unloading personnel handle bags (ouch!) and b) I don't know what kind
of scanning, etc. checked baggage is subject to.

Can anyone advise/reassure me? Has any of you traveled via Air India and
dealt with this situation? Thanks in advance.

By the way, my laptop is a Tandon 386SX - nice machine, excellent
support/service and the best price I found for comparable features. I have no
connection with Tandon other than as a satisfied customer.
