New chips: AMD's CMOS 386, their answer to Intel's refusing to let them second-source the regular 386 (as they did the 286). CMOS will consume somewhat less power then nMOS but AMD still hast o make sure that the chip architecture doesn't infringe on Intel's patents, copyrights, or whatever; Intel's 386SL, which includes on-chip a lot of the peripherals that otherwise appear in other chips and which therefore reduces space and power reuqirements and increases reliabililty; Intel is also developing a CMOS 486 chip. All of these have been "announced" but not yet seen in production. The 386SL was announced by Intel in Japan, emphasizing the chip's importnce for the laptop market. Jeff
