[comp.sys.laptops] Which laptop given a few criteria?

miker@yuma.acns.colostate.edu (Mike Riley) (02/08/91)

I'm in the market for a laptop with the following features (give or take a
little):

	- 1.44 MB floppy drive
	- possibly a hard disk
	- backlit/sidelit LCD
	- external video port (CGA or possible VGA)
	- not too heavy (certainly < 10 lb, preferably < 7 lb)
	- at least 1 hour battery life (seems to be most of them)
	- the kicker ... < ~$1000

I've looked at the Toshiba T1000SE (no hard disk though) at ~$900, and
DAMARK have the NEC Multispeed HD for $1000 (it weighs a hefty 14.3 lb
without the charger). The two conflicting concerns I have are
(i) insufficient disk space with 1.44 MB to run some applications, and
(ii) how rugged and durable are the hard disks in portables these days?

Any comments on the two machines I'm looking at would be appreciated. If
you think there are other machines I should look at (read: personal
preference) I'd also appreciate hearing.

If there seems to be enough interest, I'll post a summary of comments.
