I recently got a Tandy 100FD for my Mom (which I share with her! <grin>). I also just got for it a COM-CALL TM-2400 Modem. This is a 2400 bps modem which plugs directly into the serial port of your computer. It is barely larger than a DB25-DB25 extendor plug and gets its power fromthe telephone line. I got it from a catalog company called Damark for under $70. Seems like a pretty good deal since it works very well, accepting the Hayes command set. The main thing I don't like about it is that it has a female DB25 connector on the computer side. My 1100FD has a DB9 male plug for COM1. This modem was touted as being very convenient for laptops and I agreed on face value, but for me to use it I have to have a DB25-DB9 step down adaptor. Plus since the combination of DB25male-DB9female is THE ONE combination of step down adaptors which Radio Shack sells! So I also have to have a DB9-DB9 gender changer. My question is this, don't most laptops use a DB9 connector for their standard com port? If so, this device should reflect that point of commonality. Zack Sessions ...!ecsvax!uncw!session

I agree with you there: Those modems should have 9 pin female plugs default. I happened to go to Radio Shack today to find out the same thing: 25male to 9female is not in their catalog! I needed it for a mouse so I cut off the old plug and replaced it, but it must be very irritating for a notebook/modem combination not to get the correct adapter. I want to buy a 2400 baud portable modem myself. mnp4,mnp5, hayes compatibility seems to be what I want - and yes, 9 pin female plug! Any comments on pros/cons of brands gratefully accepted. Are there any nice fax/modem combinations that fit the bill? Price < 200$ if possible... You know, now that you mention it, I got a mouse a few months back which came with a 25 to 9 pin adaptor (or was it a 9 to 25? <grin>) Now, what did I DO with that sucker?!? >I want to buy a 2400 baud portable modem myself. mnp4,mnp5, hayes >compatibility seems to be what I want - and yes, 9 pin female plug! >Any comments on pros/cons of brands gratefully accepted. I am also not in the fax morket at this time so I haven't really priced any or seriously investigated technical attributes. PC Mag has been running several PC fax stories for the past few issues, though. Zack Sessions ...!ecsvax!uncw!session
