[comp.sys.laptops] TRAC Laptops - Are they any good ???

srm@dimacs.rutgers.edu (Scott R. Myers) (03/14/91)

Well after I got my little heart set on a Toshiba T1000SE to do
minimally what I want in a laptop I decided to ask what I would want
in an ideal laptop. Well after I got through that and saw that an
equivelant Toshiba would cause me to open a second mortgage on my home
I said forget it. One day looking through my Computer Shopper I saw
it. The ideal system (for me) for only $1599. Could this be true I
said to myself. I called and asked about and it really stacked up.
Now for my big question for those of you on the net. Are TRAC laptops
any good? I can't put it any simpler. At least with Toshiba I know
the reputation but who is TRAC. Any opinions about the company and
their products would be appreciated. Thanx.

The guy in the next office from me ordered one today. Vendor
Under-Ware Electronics in Wichita (800-442-1408) SAYS it's a Samsung,
and Samsung rated extremely well in a recent major magazine review.
In brief, it's like a Compaq notebook with double the grayscale value,
plus a short-card slot, at 1/3 Compaq's list price.

Highlights:
  30-day, no-questions-asked refund
6.6 lbs. with battery (longest-lasting battery reviewed)
  one 8-bit standard card slot
VGA b&w lcd with 32 grayscale, not 16
  $1,999 with 1 MB ram
  5 MB ram max, $80/MB
  386sx, 16 MHz, Award BIOS
Ext. keyboard and VGA (color) monitor ports
  8.5" x 11" (AC adapter is external)
20 MB, 27 ms, IDE drive
  - the 20MB drive is perhaps the weakest feature, which can be
fixed via the extra slot, or upgrading from 20 MB when better
    2" drives exist.

I bought the TRAC 286 from Underware a while back. The computer is
excellent. Better than the Zeos or Zenith ones I bought a few months ago
and the folks at underware were great. Check it out!

For what it's worth, my in-laws live in Wichita and I have visited the
Under-Ware store there. They seemed to be pretty competent and the prices
seem right. I saw the Trac machines there, and they looked quite nice.
I can't remember about the exact weight.

Hope this helps,
