This past week, for curiosity reasons, I took apart two used oil filters to make a comparison of their quality and filtering media. The first was a Motorcraft. ($3.95) I punched a hole in it with a can opener and then proceeded with a needle nosed pliers to twist the wrapper off like a sardine can. In about 5 minutes, I had a folded paper filter element. The element looked like dark grey felt meterial. The second was an Amsoil. ($8.00) I tried to punched a hole in it with a can opener, but could not. I then proceeded with an ice pick and tin snips. After 25 minutes, I had a canister that looked like colander (something to drain lettuce in) which was the filter element. Inside the filter element, it was packed with very dirty cotton. CONCLUSION: The $8.00 Amsoil filter is one tough cookie mechanically. As for filtering, the total mass of the filter media of the Amsoil filter is about 10 to 20 times that of the Motorcraft. (This is posted for information only, I am not an Amsoil dealer.)
