[comp.sys.laptops] Can I hack a plasma display for HiRes?

steve@endgame.gsfc.nasa.gov (Steve Rezsutek) (04/05/91)

I'm trying to come up with my own version of a `UNIX'(TM) [well, I actually
plan to run Mach ;-)] laptop/briefcase system but I can't seem to locate a
suitable display. I concider `suitable' to be oh, say, 800x600. [I'd like to
use it as an X terminal over a slip link to work].

While doing some ``market research'', I've noticed that nearly all of the
VGA type plasma displays use 4 ``dots'' on the panel per pixel of display.

My question is:

Can I, through a bit of software [&/| hardware] tom-hackery, access each
of these `dots' individualy, effectively creating a somewhat small &
dim 1280x960 display?? In the ideal case, this would be reversable, so
that I could use the console as a `standard' VGA for text and have the
X server flip the right bits and go into the hires 'mode'.

Alterntely, is there a source for a display panel (plasma preferred, but
I'll live w/ LCD] in the 800x600 range? Even 768x576 would do.

Reply by email, or post as you see fit. I'll summarize the mail I get
and post a follow-up.

Thanks in advance.

Steve
