[comp.sys.laptops] NEC ultralite questions

mse@laertes.juliet.ll.mit.edu ( Martin Eby) (05/08/91)

I have an opportunity to buy a NEC ultralite machine
V30, 2megs, extra battery, internal modem
for about $1000, but I don't know if that is a good deal. So...

1) Is $1000 a fair price for the described unit?

2) How long will the battery last?

3) How big is the A/C power/charger unit?

4) Is it a CGA display?

5) Any problems with compatability?

6) Can you use real-time data compression programs such as 'Stacker'
with the silicon disk? I assume so....

Thanks in advance,

Martin

DAK is offering the 2MB version for $899 and an extra battery for $69.
They're new. They also throw in a disk version of MS Works, for whatever
that's worth...

Unless your deal includes some application ROM cards or something like that,
you could do better with DAK. Also, IME Computer in Boston is/was selling
refurbed 2MB units for $749 or something like that.

>2) How long will the battery last?

About 2 hours. Less if you're using the modem; more if you put the CPU in
turtle-mode.

>3) How big is the A/C power/charger unit?

Approximately 5x2x3" (guessing...) and 1.5lbs (more guessing). Kind of
unwieldy...

>4) Is it a CGA display?
Yes, but monochrome of course. Two kinds of color emulation.

>5) Any problems with compatability?
I haven't run into any so far.

I've been using XEQ and PKLITE for executables with no problem, but I haven't
tried Stacker.
