The era of the $3000+ "serious" laptop is drawing to a close: In the newest CompuAdd catalog is a machine called the 316nx For $2495 you get: ---- 8.5" x 11" x 2.1" 7 lbs 386sx 16Mhz VGA 8.5" diagonal screen and external connector 30M 23ms hard disk plus 1.44M floppy 1M RAM (expandable to 5M) Memory Expansion is $100/1 Meg, $200/2 Meg, or $400/4 Meg Batteries are $79 Internal 2400baud modem is $129. They also sell this in a kit with a Canon BJ-10e printer and the 2400baud internal modem for $2859. This is $235 for the printer! NOTE: this is NOT the CompuAdd CompanionSX 386sx. That one is still priced at $3595 with a 20M disk and 2M RAM. The companion is 1.8" thick and 5.7 pounds so it's a bit smaller. It also has a 10" screen versus 8.5" for the 316nx and runs at 20Mhz vs. 16Mhz. I don't think that is $1000 worth of difference (with the same 2M of RAM) especially since the 316nx has a 30M disk vs. 20M. The Companion is made by Sharp. I don't know who makes the 316nx. Tempting, tempting... My magic number is <$2000 to replace my T1000SE with +2M memory. For that I want a 386 architecture, >=30M hard disk, VGA with external connector, 1.44M floppy and >=2M RAM with <$100/Meg expansion. It's getting there. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- LAURENCE BREVARD MCC CAD Program Framework Satellite 3500 W.Balcones Center Dr, Austin, TX 78759 (512)338-3567 FAX:(512)338-3897 BREVARD@MCC.COM ...!cs.utexas.edu!milano!cadillac!brevard ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOME: 4705 Travis View Ct, Austin, TX 78732 (512)266-2165 fax:(512)266-1738
