A friend of mine needs to purchase a laptop or a notebook very soon, and him not being a computer person and me being a unix workstation person, we both desperately need advice. I also plan to buy a notebook computer in the somewhat more distant future. He'll be using the machine primarily for (what else?) word processing, and he'll be using it in Europe at some point in the future. We assume this just means he needs a power converter. Here is what we think are his requirements: Hard disk, perhaps 40Mbyte Floppy disk Expansion slots full size keyboard (no numeric keypad) Internal rechargable batteries Internal modem option External connection for a Color monitor (is that VGA?) Nice display Lots of Memory expandability Less than 15 Lbs willing to spend about $3200 + printer and monitor price, a total of maybe $5000 (Would love to spend less) What else? We don't know The requirements for my system are similar, but I would like something much lighter, as light as possible. (He wouldn't mind either if the price is right.) If there are any higher than normal resolution frame buffers out there I would be interested in those too, but that is not crucial. So I would be eternally greatful for any insightful analysis that would help narrow down the choice from the seemingly infinite array that confronts one upon opening a buyers guide. I'd also like to hear about anything that experience has taught you is important to consider when buying a laptop. Mail to me (fox@allegra.att.com) and I will summarize, or post if you thing there is general interest. I would think there is. -david
