[comp.sys.laptops] TI TravelMate 2000 Info Needed

fuka@spectre.unm.edu (Mary Fuka) (05/27/91)

A local store is selling the TI TravelMate 2000 with a 20 Mbyte hard
disk, 1 Mbyte RAM, and a 3.5 inch floppy for $1000 (new). Anyone know
if this is a good computer and is this a good price for this or similiar
systems? My application is primarily simple word processing. I need
both a hard disk and a floppy, 20 Mbytes is plenty big. I am less
concerned about processor speed (the TravelMate has a 12 MHz 80C286).
It would seem a good system for my needs, can anyone recommend a better
system for about the same price?

Assuming the AC adapter and internal battery are included (they always
are), it's a great price; maybe even too good to be true. The lowest I
have seen for a new unit is about $1900, excluding the floppy drive. In
January it was about $2600. With 386 laptops now the rage, this machine
may become the bargain of the year. You won't find anything better or
lighter for $1000, not even an 8088 class laptop.

Note that the floppy drive is a box that plugs on the back and is
secured with two of thumb nuts. You can leave it attached when carrying
from one table to another, but you must detach it to pack the system
around.

The system is probably overpowered for simple word processing, unless
you want to run MS Windows and WYSIWYG fonts. I run multitasking
DESQview windows, Kermit, Sprint word processor, Framework III, 123 2.2,
QRAM, HyperDisk disk cache, ProKey, and various smaller programs.

Try reading the screen in your typical lighting conditions before you
buy; it can wash out in bright light.
