[comp.sys.laptops] 486 laptop

Responses to my recent posting asking about 486 true portables have been
few. (Many thanks to those who did respond!) The Dolch is highly recom-
mended by several people. I myself have found ads for the Dataworld Por-
tacomp and the Modgraph color 486 portable. Unfortunately, all of these
seem to be in the category of luggables.

Well, I'm still holding out: anyone have any other pointers?

Zenith Data Systems makes the SupersPort 486. The brochure says it
weights 10.8 lbs without battery, and measures 12.13" x 12.75" x 3.1"
without battery. The battery is an additional 4.2 pounds -- no size
stated.

25 MHz, 4MB RAM expandable to 16MB, 3.5" floppy and 120MB hard disk,
one serial/one parallel/one VGA video/one mouse port (I think --
there's a typo here in the brochure)/one external FDD port. The
keyboard detaches, and a docking station is available. 10.7" screen,
film-type supertwist, CCFL, edgelit LCD. VGA in 64 grey levels (but
I'll bet you can't perceive them!) Two internal proprietary slots for
modem and memory. (But memory option sizes are 4MB and 8MB, so you'd
need to fill both slots to get 16MB, losing the modem.) You can get it
with a 20MHz 486SX for less money.

It's got the Isopoint mouse-substitute in the keyboard.

I'll bet it costs an arm and a leg.

(Disclaimer: I was once a ZDS employee, but no longer have any
financial interest in the company.)

That sounds a lot like my Supersport Sx as far as the expansion slots go but
I question that you'd lose the modem for 16 meg memory option. Wouldn't it
be more likely that the 16 megs would be from stacking two 8 meg boards
piggyback instead of trying to shoehorn one into the side location for a
modem?
