[net.auto] Over Generation

randyo@ihlts.UUCP (11/01/83)

I have been the proud owner of a 1957 Buick Special
convertible for about two months now. Along with several
other small problems which I have been fixing I have
a problem with the generator (not alternator).
The generator is constantly putting out all its got
i.e. the amps guage reads full charge at speeds over
25 - 30 mph. I am quite sure that the guage is correct.
The voltage regulator is new (replaced by the prievious
owner). Last week I removed the generator and cleaned it
up, looked for shorts etc, and it all looked fine.
When I installed it on the car and polarized it, it worked beautifully
for two days (charge level went to almost zero at any
speed with accessorys on or off). But now it's charging
at full bore again and I really don't understand why.
I then tryed dissconnecting the feild wire completely
and it was still charging at full rate (this suggests a
shorted field even though it did not measure dead short
with a good low ohms meter). I would greatly appreciate
any suggestions any of you generator experts may have.
Please reply by mail and when I find the problem I will
summerize to the net.
Thanks in advance.
