[comp.unix.i386] Telebit Modem wont work on Compaq 386 w/ interactive S/V 386 3.2

brier@rolloutq.UUCP (Frederick N. Brier) (05/02/89)

I have been having problems getting uucp to work properly through a
Telebit Trailblazer Plus modem. The system consists of a Compaq 386/25
running Interactive's Unix S/V 386 3.2. I was also trying to get a
Computone ATvantage 4 port to work, but have for the moment removed it
from the link using the com1 port/tty00 port instead. Interactive has
informed me that uucp was originally designed by AT&T to work at 1200bps
and that they hacked to work at 2400bps. They say it was not designed to
work at 19.2kbps. They feel that someone out there has figured out how
to get their OS to work uucp at 19.2kbps, but don't know who or how.

The problem appears to be that uucp is not acknowledging packets fast
enough. It will halt in the middle of transmission. The -x9 level of
debugging using Uutry displays an "Alarm x" message after too long a delay.
Bad header packets show up, supposedly as a result of uucp losing track of
where it was in acking packets. Transmission eventually breaks down and
the conversation fails. Effective data rates displayed are in the range of
25 bytes/sec and 420 bytes/sec.

If you have worked a way around this problem, please send me mail
or contact me. I have turned off my news feed until I can fix this problem
so please don't post. The people at uunet were kind enough to post this
for me. Thank you in advance for your help.
