I'm posting this for a friend: please respond to him. Thanks. I am attempting to bring up the news software (2.11) on an IBM PS/2 running SCO XENIX 2.2.3. This is a 386 based machine. Everything seems to compile ok, but when rnews is run from cron, every time, inews sends mail to news indicating that "inbound news is garbled". I have tried 2.11 with all 17 patches, without the patches and other combinations in between. No matter what I do, I get the same result. I recently brought up the same software on a Convergent Technologies machine without any problems, but that experience doesn't seem to help me here. If there is anyone out there that has done this before, please email or phone me (I'm starting to get desperate :-). Thanks, Eric Deese (osu-cis!liebert!esd) phone (614) 841-5508 PS Any suggestions, no matter how bizarre, will be accepted and given the fullest consideration.

I had the same problem with 2.10 which turned out to be incompatible versions of "compress". I switched both ends to compress 4.0 and had no more problems. If this is the problem switching your feed to uncompressed format should solve the problem, or you could copy one of the batched files out of /usr/spool/uucp and try to uncompress it and then edit it.
