[net.auto] idiot lights, 1977 Celica????

lriff@psuvax.UUCP (Larry Riffle) (11/14/83)

I just finished installing a "maintenance free" battery in my '77 Celica.
Since there are no fill caps I can't connect the sensor for the low
battery light. Now its on all the time.

I would like to leave the other lights working and just disable the battery
warning. Any suggestions?? Its not quite as simple as just shorting it out,
the light is normally on and requires a current (normally from the sensor
in the battery) to turn it off.

I have solved the low battery electrolyte warning signal problem
in my 76 Corolla and 81 Mazda as follows:
Remove the cell cover from one bank of cells;
Plug two of the cell fill holes with rubber stoppers (lab type);
Adapt the sensor to the third hole. Make sure a opening for
venting is left.
This has worked fine for at least five years.
Another solution, which I did not take, was to buy a replacement
battery from your dealer at a ridiculous price.
By the way, if you ever need warranty service on your battery,
be sute to remove the adaptors and replace the original cover.
