I am thinking of buying a Toyota 4WD mini-pickup (used) and would appreciate hearing from anyone out there who owns one or has had any experience (good or bad) with one. My major concern is the reported lack of power--is it really that bad? Basically I am looking for something that will get me where I want to go in the winter, in style. If I get one, I was also considering putting in a lift kit and some larger tires (I am a hot rodder at heart, and I can't stand to own anything that is stock). Can the stock engine handle the extra weight of the tires? I have seen hop-up kits that include headers, new carb/intake, etc. for the engine that would help, and I would also like to hear from people who have gone that route. ...Musclecars in the summer, 4WD in the winter... :*: Pat Mancuso :*: Penn State University :*: {burdvax, allegra}!psuvax!mancuso

I would guess that it would have enough power to do what it was designed to do. The weight of big tires and its effect on power can be minimised by checking the current motor RPM with the calculated motor RPM with big tires. if you get too large a drop, performance will suffer (axle ratio change time!). The real problem is the flywheel effect of the bigger tires overloading your brakes. The best advice is: talk to someone in the offroad biz that you trust and don't get carried away.
