[net.auto] Homebrew Fuel Injection

drabik@ihnss.UUCP (12/14/83)

Is anyone familiar with the nature of the electronic fuel
injection systems on the new American cars? I'm doing some
tinkering with my engine and am looking for some basic components
(injector nozzles, high pressure pumps, regulators, and so on)
to build around. I got prices on the Lucas system parts (I'm
working on a British car) which knocked my socks off. A parts
place wanted $90 apiece for the INJECTORS. Authenticity is nice,
but only up to a point. So, if anyone knows anything about an
AMERICAN system that works well, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
I'm also looking for automotive sensors for manifold
pressure, air temperature, and exhaust gas oxygen content.
I'm trying a new approach to sliding a high-performance car past
California emissions laws: I'm going to try to COMPLY WITH THE
REQUIREMENTS! I'll be pleased to let anyone know how it all turns
out, although it may be a few months before I get some results.

I will be anxious to hear how your homebrew system
works out. I don't really have any good suggestions on
injection systems but thought I might mention a few
things on the pollution equipment.

A good oxygen sensor is used on the Volvo and I believe
is made by Bosch. This is the Lamba-Sond which is used
to measure the lambda point of engine operation.
This is a point at which the engine operates which
produces a mixture of gasses which can be handled
by a three way catalytic converter. The lambda point
is a very exacting mixture and so the air/fuel mixture
must be very carefully controlled. This is done with
the Lambda Sond and a magic black box to properly
control the fuel mixture. This with the three way converter
and air pump is probably your best bet to meet the pollution
requirements. The only problem is
ignition timing must be somewhat retarded as well and so
perfomance will drop. I don't think you will have quite
the performance you had before.

You might also look into the methods used on the new
Mustang or some other American models where performance
levels are beginning to approach pre pollution days.
