I'd like to express my appreciation to Lauren, Chuqui, Mark, Karen, Jishnu (my local usenet guru), et al, and blush for the ravings of Frank Adrian. By way of adding something CONSTRUCTIVE, let me point out some of the intangible, but VERY REAL, advantages to my company of supporting my use of the net (apart from the already mentioned "I want my employees to be happy and not quit"): - I DO INDEED subscribe to work-related newsgroups; in fact, the bulk of my time in readnews is spent on them. - Some of the groups not DIRECTLY related to my work nevertheless keep me in touch with broader technical issues. For instance, I find net.micro.??? both more timely and more accurate than my subscription to BYTE. (That's not to say that everything, or even most things, on the net are fact, but neither is the contents of BYTE. On the net, I get enough points of view that I can decide for myself what to believe. If STARGATE changes this last fact, I'll agree with Adrian, but I'm not sufficiently paranoid to believe that.) - It makes me an active part of that elusive creature, the "technical community." Among my company's benefits from this is increased contact with potential new employees. (E.g. - someone reads one of my postings, decides I may be doing something interesting, and sends a resume.) (E.g. again - most universities where we recruit are either on or gatewayed to usenet.) I am not speaking hypothetically. I can cite chapter and verse for each of these points. Maybe you can use them at your company to assure continued support for the net. Dave Tutelman
