[comp.unix.i386] 386ix mailer problem

asv@gaboon.UUCP (Stan Voket) (11/09/89)

I've just installed Interactive's tcp/ip module here at gaboon. When
I receive mail from a remote site I get headers like the following
(from white!root to gaboon!asv).

--------------------------------------------------
From uucp Wed Nov 8 19:31:18 1989
Received: by gaboon.UUCP (5.51/smail2.2/06-30-87)

blah, blah, blah...

--------------------------------------------------

Mailx and/or Elm mailers pick up uucp as a return address no matter
who the mail is from. It should be From root. Has anyone else
experienced this on their 386ix system? What should I do to rectify
this condition?

Thanks,

Stan

We had similar problems when we installed our 386/ix system and it was
apparently caused by sendmail configuration. I can't remember the specifics,
but check out the sendmail manual and the sendmail configuration file.

I have been getting this ever since my system has been online (about 2 years).
And I do not even have the tcp module installed. Just running basic mail
does this. When I enter mailx, it shows me that all my mail is either from
"root", "uucp", or "jep" (jep is my login). On other systems that I have
accounts on, when I enter mailx it shows me who sent me the mail.

HELP!

This is an easy one. Check out /usr/lib/install.mail. Once this script is
run your problems should go away. Note: This script does MUCH MORE than
just fix the above problem. Look at the script first and make sure you know
the consequences of running it. (Such as installing smail).
