[net.auto] turn signals and somatotypes

colonel@sunybcs.UUCP (George Sicherman) (12/02/83)

I have noticed that fat people signal their turns less often
than thin people. Can anybody confirm this?

walsh@ihuxi.UUCP (12/05/83)

I don't know about them being fat, but Cadillac drivers NEVER signal
and usually cut in front of everyone. Maybe most Cadillac drivers are
fat. I just want to know: Do bad drivers buy Cadillacs, or does owning
a Cadillac make someone a bad driver? :-)

(I hope no Cadillac drivers are reading!)

I don't know about bad drivers buying Cads, but certainly
no one that knows anything about cars would buy one.

I don't think that all New Jersey drivers belong to a single
somatotype category (either fat or thin), but, for the most part,
they DON'T signal turns!

[This is my observation after 18 months of NJ living - I resided in
Manhattan for the previous 8 years, and I'll take NYC drivers over NJ
drivers anyday; they may be crazy, but they're not stupid.]

As anyone raised in New Jersey can tell you, most of the bad drivers
in New Jersey came from New York City.

As someone who came from neither New Jersey or New York, my observation
is that the New York City (NOTE not Upper New York State!!!) drivers are
far worse than New Jersey drivers in reguards to hanging in the left lane
doing 50MPH and in not signalling and being first to blow the horn 37nSec
after the light has changed! New Yorkers however are topped by the Boston
area for crazies!!!!!! Truely Boston has to be the most incredible area
for crazy driving!!!

Now, now! Let's not pick on Boston drivers so fast! True, we may have the
only offensive drivers in the nation, but worst we are not. If you want
truely crazy, try driving anywhere near Quebec City. You'll love Boston
after that. Also, my vote for sanest driving location has to go to the
midwest (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa). And back on the original subject,
most people who drive Cadillacs are overweight pompous drivers who don't
understand driving...they prefer to do their own thing (such as change lanes
whenever they want). If they knew how to drive, they'd have MB 450SEL's!

As a native New Yorker who spent four years in Beantown, all I can say, is ...
if you can't take the drivers, use public transit. It's excellent in
both New York and Boston

Perhaps the reason fat people don't signal (at least on left
turns) is that their legs get in the way of the turn signal
lever. You think I'm kidding? I'm not fat, but I'm 6'10" tall.
I can't signal a left turn until after the clutch is in.
