[comp.unix.i386] Help with mail

mark@gizzmo.UUCP (mark hilliard) (12/03/89)

I checked over the install.mail in /usr/lib, ran it and am having serious
new mail problems now.

If I now mail to myself ie:

mailx mark

or mailx gizzmo!mark

The mail gets sent, but the date line is first rather than the from line, which
kill the mailer upon trying to read it.

Any incomming mail works just fine.

Any Ideas?

Yes, look in the sendmail.cf file for the line (about line number 268) which
looks like:

Mlocal, P=/bin/lmail, F=lsDFMhumSU, S=10, R=20, A=lmail -s $u
                                 ^
If you check out your sendmail.ocf file you will see that the U didn't exist
in the Mlocal line. If you comment out that line and re-type it without
the U (or just change it and and hope you remember you took it out :-)
then that should fix your problems.

I am running ISC Unix 3.2 which uses sendmail as a mailer.

Mail is running fine, and paths and aliases are working - but
I can't find the "transports" file - which I need to move the
mail for by bbs users over into the correct directory. Where
is this file checked for?

Transports is a "Smail 3" file.

You need to either install smail 3 (which isn't a bad idea :-) or write a
ruleset for sendmail that does the same thing as the rerouting of bbs users
that smail 3 knows how to do.

The second is probably going to be harder than the first option :-)
