[comp.unix.i386] Can protected mode programs run under Unix VP/ix or DOS Merge

rho@maccs.dcss.mcmaster.ca (Raymond Ho) (11/24/89)

Hello,

Can a protected mode program run under Unix VP/ix or DOS Merge?
I would like to run SmallTalk /V 286 under VP/ix. Unix 386 already set
the CPU to protected mode, wondering what would happen when SmallTalk
set the protected mode flag again.

Anyone had use protected mode programs under VP/ix or DOS Merge?
What programs did you used? How did they behave?

Thanks!

No, DosMerge and VP/ix both run DOS in a virtual 8086 environment.

There is no way to switch into protected mode from them (that you would
want to try, that is). The Unix OS is using all the protected resources
and the Smalltalk software would probibly corrupt them.... Not
a good idea.... :-)

What if any Unixes will run Dos Merge ? I am trying to find one for
ESIX (ENIX??) or ANY sysV strain and am getting the usual runaround.
I would really prefer Merge to Vpix as many of the problems Iv'e seen
related to vpix donot occur on Merge with Uport /386 3.0E . I would like
to upgrade to SYSV 386/3.2 But want to keep merge. Any help appreciated.

VP/ix will work with ESIX SYSV3.2 Rev. C as will AT&T Simultask but
we have NOT supported DOS Merge.

Hi Jeff. Does ESIX support RLL controllers? I didn't see anything about RLL
mentioned in the sales information.

Well.... Yes BUT.... We have tried it on the wd1003v-sr2 and I have heard
that customers have got it to work on other cards, but do to all of the
dirve-controller combos you can make out there we do not say that it will work.
You are on your own with that one....
