I have a couple of questions concerning running the X window system under ESIX. Currently I am running ESIX 3.2 rev A with the rev B upgrade installed. This is running on a 20 Mhz 386 (AGI), 2.5 Mbytes of memory, and an Everex Evergraphics display adapter. 1) Currently the documentation says that X windows only runs under EGA, VGA, or the Everex Ultragraphics adapters. Somewhere I thought someone might have said that it might support a Hercules adapter. Does anyone know if this is true under rev C? 2) Currently only the Logitech bus mouse is supported under rev B and only on ports 0 or 1. Does this change under rev C? 3) If I were to purchase an ATI VGA Wonder 512K w/ mouse, would it work under rev B or rev C versions of X windows? 4) Does anyone know what Everex is charging for the rev C upgrade? Thanks-- Richard Jinkins jinkins@emx.utexas.edu

I have 4MB, and X is untenable. It ``won't'' work with 2.5MB. | 1) Currently the documentation says that X windows only runs under | EGA, VGA, or the Everex Ultragraphics adapters. Somewhere I thought | someone might have said that it might support a Hercules adapter. | Does anyone know if this is true under rev C? I don't think so. The docs only mention EGA as the lowest common demoninator. Get a VGA. | 2) Currently only the Logitech bus mouse is supported under rev B and | only on ports 0 or 1. Does this change under rev C? Rev C allows Logitech serial and bus mice. There is a problem with other serial mice - at least the GVC Lite mouse doesn't work worth a flip. | 3) If I were to purchase an ATI VGA Wonder 512K w/ mouse, would it | work under rev B or rev C versions of X windows? Probably; however, I don't know for sure. | 4) Does anyone know what Everex is charging for the rev C upgrade? I paid $99.00 to MicroMuse (508-460-0960) for B->C. -- Dave Burton uunet!ism780c!laidbak!daveb

So your only options are EGA and VGA, With VGA going from 640x480 to 1024 x 768 depending on which VGA card you use. > 2) Currently only the Logitech bus mouse is supported under rev B and As of Rev. C We support The Logitech Bus mouse, Logitech Serial mouse, and the Microsoft Bus mouse. The Serial mouse is still only for tty00 and tty01. The Bus mouse is supported at ant free interupt usable by the bus card. > 3) If I were to purchase an ATI VGA Wonder 512K w/ mouse, would it > work under rev B or rev C versions of X windows? We have not test the ATI card, but customers have said that both the mouse port works and it displays at 640x480. I know we have planed to work on a driver for this card but as of now we do not have the tech info or a eval version for this card. > 4) Does anyone know what Everex is charging for the rev C upgrade? I don't know...... You can call (415) 683-ESIX for the price. -- Jeff Ellis ESIX SYSTEM/V A Division Everex Systems Inc. I have 4MB, and X is untenable. It ``won't'' work with 2.5MB. I have 8 megs, in an Everex STEP/25, with a _fast_ SCSI drive and it's STILL untenable. (Actually, the "fast" SCSI drive even 'slugs' it out under ESIX.) As far as I'm concerned it doesn't work with 8 megs, either. If you look up the word "slow" in a dictionary you'll find a picture of an ESIX box running X-Windows. kEITHe

Well, let's be fair, folks. ESIX's VGA color driver is not usable, but the monochrome driver is livable for many applications, even if its no blazing speed demon. I am sure they have improvements in the works, I only wish their upgrade policy were more friendly. -- | Clint Jeffery, U. of Arizona Dept. of Computer Science | cjeffery@arizona.edu -or- {noao allegra}!arizona!cjeffery --
