The car: 79 Rabbit problem: If you use the windshield washer it appears to short the iginition system. At idle it will kill the engine. At highway speeds the engine begins bucking badly. Also one the warning buzzer (seat belt?) moans meekly at the same time. Any one run across this type of problem before? I kinda suspect it's the wiring in the steering column, but i haven't been able to locate a wiring diagram for the car yet. Can't tinker with it at my leisure as the car is my girl friends daily transportation. thanks in advance Rich Kensicki harpo!rhk

A 1980 Rabbit I worked on had the same problem, except that the warning buzzer didn't moan. The problem was in the wiring in the steering column and is easy to fix. Find a copy of Muir's book on Rabbits and take off the steering wheel to find the short.
