Several months ago I received a recall notice from VW concerning the possibility of the brake cables corroding under the rug on the passenger side due to water being able to somehow leak in. Well my '78 VW's floor recently started to get soaked when it rains. The middle of the floor in front of the passenger seat gets wet. Has anyone had a problem like this? Has anyone taken their car in for repairs? Is the source of the leak fixed or only the cables if they're damaged?

The objects that corrode are the aluminum brake lines which hold the break fluid. (The only break cable on a Rabbit is for the parking break.) These aluminum lines are subjected to water and road salt and may develop holes allowing the brake fluid to escape. The system on Rabbits is dual diagonal so even if a hole does develop on one diagonal, the other diagonal line will still be ok and stop on one front and one rear wheel. VW will replace the aluminum brake lines but not any leaks under the recall agreement. Art Deacon AT&T Bell Laboratories
