[comp.unix.i386] Where can I order a hard disk

mattioli@took.dec.com (John R. Mattioli) (02/10/90)

I've now placed two orders with HDI and I've had two problems. The
first time it took them over three weeks to deliver my drive to me. This
wouldn't have been so bad, except that they told me 4 to 6 business days. The
second time, they lost my order completely. Perhaps HDI doesn't realize that
people depend on getting what they order. I'm totally fed up with them and I'm
not used to being treated like this by companys I need to do business with.

Ok, enough of the complaint portion of this message.

I'm looking to order a Quantum pro105s hard disk for a reasonable price.
The pro40s (the first drive I ordered from HDI) is working great and I'd just
like more disk space. Can someone please suggest a place (other then HDI) where
I can get one of these drives? Alternatively, can someone give me a phone
number for Quantum? I'd really appreciate any help that is available.

Interesting. I, too, would like to know the name of a good
company. I'm thinking of putting together a lunchbox 386 PC, and I'm
looking for a good source of half-height 300MB SCSI or ESDI drives.

I wasn't going to post, but there has been enough conversation about it and
Darryl is putting together a luggable, so here goes. I have had excellent
luck dealing with:

Storage System Engineering Services
3350 Scott Boulevard #1902
Santa Clara, CA 95054 (408) 727-6040

I have no affiliation with them other than having spent several thousands of
dollars in their store and via mail order. I used to deal with Eric, the
principal (I think) but haven't talked to him in nearly a year. I have
recently been dealing with Gloria. She sounds like an airhead on the phone,
but when I needed 4Mb of 80ns column static RAM chips for my old Micronics,
she rounded 'em up and had them in UPS Red the same day. They were the right
parts even though a different manufacturer and part number than I ordered.
I've bought a lot of stuff from Eric and gotten some pretty good advice as
well (like don't buy his EGA luggable). He's no UNIX buff, but knows his
products and his vendors. He is the local distributor for a rather complete
line of cases for portables and desktop machines. He's price competitive
although not the least expensive. I generally spend a little more when I
want the reliability. He'll haggle a little, but not much. If you tell him
you can get it for $10 less at Fry's, he sends you to Fry's. 'nuff said.

You might try DC Drives. They advertize in Computer Shopper and have
LOTS of drives. I ordered from them once, but they backordered the
drive on me, so I reordered from an Imprimis distributor, Rorke Data
Supply.

I'm not sure if they handle Quantum or not, but I've been really
pleased with a company call Dirt Cheap Drives for larger high-performance
drives. They ship the same day you call, even if you call late in
the day. And they have some great prices at times.

Their number: 800-872-6007.

I've ordered a couple of drives and accessories from HDI over the years
and haven't had any trouble. With any vendor, however, I first ask
if the item is being shipped from stock... and I often place no order,
or order with a void date, if not. No vendor has complete control
over when he'll get stock from the mfr, though all seem to be
optimistic (and yes, sometimes I call back only to learn that
the item arrived but all have been sold. But then, I asked for it).

This may border on commercial, I'll keep it short. I suspect
that a lot of readers of .i386 are price-sensitive, as I and
a lot of my clients are.

I have established good relations with some reliable vendors of
surplus and refurbished drives (and occasional other components).
Their inventories are unpredictable and volatile, and their
margins are thin. If any of you need a drive cheap and can tell
me what you want and how much you are willing to pay I would be
willing to act as a broker, matching up your requests to what is
available and processing the order for, oh, 10% maybe?. It would
help me keep my volume up with the distributers. I don't
want to get into a lot of handholding at that price though.
Warranties are generally 90 days except for the occasional
manufacturer's surplus parts, which run 1-2 years usually.
There is no tech support, you need to know what you are doing.
Controllers, tape drives, and random other stuff occasionally
available.

If you're interested I need a phone number and a list of
requirements, each listing
model number(s) or list of acceptable brands
	new, refurb, or used
$/drive or $/megabyte limits, exclusive of shipping.
	quantity
date needed by (so I can cull the card if not filled)

I'll start worrying about how to manage the financial end
if/when interest is indicated. Nuff said.
