I am the broke owner of a 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Diesel Car. If anyone watched 20/20 on ABC last night...they should know the story. It (GM's diesel engine) has been called the biggest lemon in automotive history. I agree. I have owned the car since August, 1982. I have sunk $2,500 in repairs thus far. (3 cracked heads, 2 fuel pumps, several injectors and misc. transmission work) I am bringing this to the net in hopes of attracting similar people with similar cars to unite and fight GM! There is hope! I am a member of the Disgruntled-Diesel Owner's Group (DDOG) in Vienna, Virginia. The group has been very successful in bringing claims to GM. It's members (some 4000 strong) have had repairs on their diesels ranging from a few hundred $$ to $7,000. I feel that belonging to a group is far more beneficial than to proceed into arbitration alone! One person vs. One BIG corporation...think about it. The company is aware of their malady. They are "most anxious to address consumer complaints" and settle with individuals out-of-court. This gives them a chance to reclaim customers who said the diesel car was the LAST GM product they would ever buy. And you can believe word travels fast! I therefore submit this to net.auto in hopes of helping those with similar situations. I would be more than happy to reply to anyone concerned with this and help in any way. #N:isrnix:2900003:000:1036 isrnix!mj Jan 20 14:43:00 1984 TO: All GM Diesel Owners (1978-1981) RE: Sympathy This is to anyone out there who is unfortunate to own "the largest lemon in automotive history." Take heart...you're not the only one! I own one along with 2.2 million others. I have had $2,500 in repairs on the engine (3 new heads, 2 fuel pumps, misc. transmission problems, and several replaced items) within the 18 months I have owned the car. I do know some recourse to those who are interested! (Maybe you caught 20/20 on ABC, Thursday, January 19th!?) They laid it on the line. I submit this to any GM diesel owner (circa 1978-1981) who wants to join in and get what's coming to them..HELP! The first step is to contact your GM Zone Division Office located in the rear section of your owner's manual. If they don't assist you...let me know. There's more than one way to skin a cat. The N.Y. edition of the AAA magazine (Dec. or Jan.) mentions an arbitration by the Better Business Bureau betwwen GM and the owners of certain GM cars, specifically, 76-83 models with turbo-hydromatic transmission, 74-83 models with Chevrolet engines, & fuel injector pumps in 78-83 diesels. -- Alex S.
