[net.auto] Accidents?

tackett@wivax.UUCP (Raymond Tackett) (01/31/84)

Why are collisions involving motor vehicles always called "accidents"?

An accident is something which is beyond predicting. For example,
if a tree limb falls on a skillfully driven, well-maintained car,
that is an accident.

However, most "accidents" involve two or more acts of sheer stupidity
occurring at the same place and time. A typical pair consists of
alcoholic intoxication and disregard for Newton's second law of motion.

Calling most vehicle collisions "accidents" is more than incorrect.
It helps foster the idea that "these things happen" in ways which are
beyond anyone's control. Therefore nobody is responsible.

Does anyone have a good idea for a short, catchy name for vehicle
collisions? The name should make it clear that the incident may or
may not have been accidental. It should also avoid slandering any of
the participants.

I will summarize and post mailed replies.
