[comp.unix.i386] Western Digital 8514/A and ISC 2.0.2

vincet@mead.UUCP (Vince Tan) (03/09/90)

Does anyone use Western Digital 8514/A video board with ISC X windows
1.1? Does ISC X windows 1.1 driver support 1024x768 non-interlaced
mode with 256 colors? I know that 8514/A driver is there but there's
no information about how many colors. I want to buy a 8514/A video
adaptor for my 386 system.

Thanks in advance.

The Western Digital (Paradise) 8514/A board works fine with the 1.1
release of Interactive's X product. While our driver was set up to
run on an IBM 8514/A, which is interlaced only, Western Digital's
board has a clever startup sequence which allows the board to run
in 60 or 70 Hz non-interlaced mode with software (such as ours) that
was designed to work interlaced.

The current driver (as supplied in the 1.1 release) works at 256 colors
only, requiring the memory expansion option. While it "sort of" works
without the memory expansion, this is an unsupported capability that
is known to have problems. A future release of the product will have
full support for unexpanded boards running in 16 colors.
