[comp.unix.i386] USENET manuals update

cpcahil@virtech.uucp (Conor P. Cahill) (03/09/90)

Many people have been asking if the USENET manuals deal is still available.
The answer is yes. If you would like a copy, just follow the directions
at the end of this posting.

Some additional information:

We have binders available for those that need binders. These binders
are 2" vinyl D-rings and cost $12.00 for a pair (you need two to hold
the manual sets. If you want the binders, add $12.00 to your order
	and let us know.

For those of you that are not in the US, if you want to order
a copy, send me an email message that contains your address and I
will find out what the postage will cost to send it to you and let
you know. The postage can be rather steep. We checked into what
it would cost to send three manuals to the netherlands in a single
package and the post office said it would cost $47.00 just for
	shipping.

Anyway, here is the information on the manual set:

This is a followup post to my original posting about printing Usenet manuals.
Many people interpreted my posting as saying that each of the listed manuals
would be printed and would cost arount $10.00. That is not correct. I will
be printing a single reference manual that will include all of the following
items:

Manual 1: The user's/programmer's reference Manual (416 pages)

 1. Introduction and permuted index (16 pages)

Manual 2: The user's/programmer's reference guide (596 pages)

 1. B News: Copyright, How To Read the Network News, Installation guide,
How to use Usenet Effectively, Usenet Messages standard
 2. C News: Installation, The Interface Between C News and the Outside
 	    World
 3. Elm: User guide, Reference guide, Config guide, Alias Users guide,
Filter System guide, Forms Mode Guide
 4. GNU: gnu-cpp, gnu-cc, gnu-gdb, gnu-make gnu-tar
 5. Pcomm: Pcomm Reference Manual
 6. RCS: Design paper, Functions of RCS

This was all printed using eroff (a third party DWB package for 386/ix that
includes HPlaserjet and postscript support) on a Panasonic Laser Partner.
I have spent about 60 hours (and a full box of paper) going over all the
documentation to ensure that it formatted correctly for the reduced size
printing.

(BTW-Someone asked if I really printed all 200,000 pages on my laser
printer - the answer is no way jose. I just printed the original
and had the printer do the replicating)

The pricing is based upon the following:

$6,500 200 copies of 1,000 pages shrink wrapped.
400 200 sets of tabs (10 tabs in a set).
	   200 200 Shipping boxes
        ------
	$7,100 Total

Which works out to $35.50 per copy + shipping. (Virginia residents must
add $1.60 (35.50 * 4.5%) sales tax).

NOTE that this price is for the manual set without any binders and without
a slipcase. The slip cases would have added $25.00 to each set. And therefore
are not available.

However, if you need binders, we can get them for $12.00 per pair. Just add
the $12.00 to your order for each pair of binders you need (you need two binders
per manual set).

Shipping costs are as follows:

Continental US: 5.50	total of: 41.00 (42.06 in Va)
	Hawaii,Alaska,Canada:	11.00	total of: 46.50

To order a copy:

Send a check, money order, whatever to

		Virtual Technologies Inc.
		46030 Manekin Plaza, Suite 160
		Sterling VA 22170.

Make sure you include the following:

		1. the check/money order made out to Virtual Technologies

		3. Your uucp mail address in case I need to get in touch
		   with you.

I got the Usenet manuals and they're great -- no more rooting around in piles
of fading printouts. I found that they fit nicely into three 1" binders, one
for the manual pages, one for the Gnu stuff, and one for news, elm, and Pcomm.
They're the same size as PC manuals, 5.5" x 8".

I prefer 1" binders because two 1" binders cost less than one 2" binder, don't
ask me why. My local full-price stationery store has them for $3.79 apiece.
